My Philosophy

Trauma is like one of those dirty family secrets, we all know about it, it’s affected us in some way, but we’re not willing to talk about it.

That’s about to change.

My philosophy is that when you’ve experienced trauma, the only way to get over it is to go through it and that journey isn’t an easy ride.

The definition of psychological trauma is the unique individual experience of an event or situation where the individual is overwhelmed by his or her emotional experience of which (subjectively) threatens their life, body integrity or sanity. A traumatic event brings up a whole range of difficult emotions in the aftermath such as depression, anxiety and fear. These feelings aren’t pleasant to experience and can lead to a temptation to avoid anything associated with the original trauma, thus never actually healing from it.

In the space of 8 months, I experienced heartbreak, post traumatic stress from a violent attempted rape, a fall down a flight of stairs and grief when I suddenly lost my father. It was a difficult year and recovering from it has been hard, especially in a modern behind-a-screen society where shying away from ‘difficult’ emotions is the norm. That’s why I’ve chosen to face this head-on and with openness.

I’m sharing my experiences about my recovery in my Blog and through my Sketches. I’m also offering insight to the Self-Care Therapies that have helped me, reviews of Therapies that I’ve explored and resources including guides to looking for a therapist, what makes a good therapy and other helpful tips that could be of help to you, or someone else along their trauma recovery journey.

I want to break the taboo of talking about ‘hard stuff’ because I believe that by sharing these experiences we can become more compassionate and connected as human beings. We all go through tough stuff sometimes and if we process it properly we can use it as a learning experience and then be a greater support for others – what an awesome life concept!

To help me process such an overload of emotions I also wrote a book of short stories which I am hoping to launch at some point in the future. Stay tuned for updates!
